It is simple to install and easy to use. Thisextender fits two (2) Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160's perfectly in astandard length bed. There seemed to be some play at theconnections when first installed, but is absolutely solid when yaksare strapped down.
Occasionally, however, the truck bed doesn't provide sufficient capacity. In these instances, a truck bed extender saves you from making a second trip or procuring an additional vehicle. When securely fastened, the truck bed extender gives all the support needed for oversized cargo.
I have traveled several hundred miles with thishaving zero problems. I zip tied 2' diameter tubular foam to the toprail to reduce wear and movement and it works great. Productshipped quick and arrived as described. I bought this to haul a 14 footJackson Cuda kayak. I own aNissan Titan short bed truck(67 inch bed length). TheDarby extender works greatfor my truck. The fit in the towhitch is a little loose andshakes some, but this is no bigissue.
The 14 foot kayakextends roughly two feetbeyond the extender. Withgood secure winch type strapsthat secure to the extenderand inside the bed of the truckthe kayak stays in place anddoes not move. The extenderhas ample width to it. The onlyreal drawback(which I haven'tdealt with yet) may be thelength of the extender. If goingup steep inclines there may bethe possibility of grounding out.My driveway has a decentincline to it and the bottom ofthe extender almost hits as Igo up or down my driveway. So be careful and watchful ofthe terrain you travel overusing this product. Otherwise itis a good, strong durable multiuse extender. I wouldreccomend for the price.
ACKcustomer service was excellentalso. Fast shipping. I first saw a hitch extenderseveral months ago. I boughtmine about 4 weeks ago andused it less than a week later. My dtr. And I took our canoeand kayak to Ky. Lake andjoined a few other folks forsome overnight camping onthe lake shore. We didn't haveto 'rassle' with getting theboats up on top of the truck. The extender is very sturdy.
Itis very simple to set up andbreak down. It stores easily inthe back of the truck. I will beusing it again tomorrow when Ihead out for some kayaking onthe Floyd's Fork Creek. This isa product definitely worthanyone's investment.
I couldvery easily haul 3-4 boats offthe back of my truck. This is what I should havepurchased in the first place. We have 2 large kayaks, 89 lbs@ 15 ft each which are veryhard to place on the rackabove the truck bed/cab, therack I originally purchased.I would put off fishing tripsbecause of the hardship andhassle of loading and tyingdown the kayak. Now with theDarby extender I simply pickup the kayak to waist heightand slide it in.
Then just acouple of easily attachedrachet straps and I'm done.Just as easy to unload. Ontop of that I can then takethe extender off quickly andeasily and put the 2 pieces inthe truck cab for safekeeping. It goes on and offquickly and very easily. Works great on my small pickup. I use it forshort transports to local waters. It takes meless than 10 minutes to insert the extender, loadthe kayak and tie it down.
I have a OK ProwlerT13 and made a wooden rest to keep the bow off thetruck. I carry the kayak upside down and it isvery stable. One thing to note though, itrequires a receiver type of hitch on your vehicle. The hitch will cost about $50 and then there isinstall which may be more than the hitch. You areall set if you already have a hitch.
The extender is certainly built for stout! I wish that one could adjust the extension to accommodate loads of varying lengths. I had one foot cut off the extender to suit my hauling needs. I secured large pipe insulation tubing with Velcro strapping to prevent marring of cargo. It would be great if there were strap mounts or loops welded on the sides.
When I first opened the box, I was surprised to see the paint was chipping in several areas. I will sand it and repaint it. The extender rattles when en route and I need to find a way to pad the juncture point. It is a good value for a reasonable price and the delivery time was great. Austin Kayak is a wonderful company to deal with. The Darby Extend a Truck totally rocks.
I amtransporting a Mad River Adventure 14 and aPerception 15.5 Avatar and it works perfectly forin town trips and longer using highways andinterstates. I covered the Darby with foam pipecovering and tie wrapped it to secure it.Protects boats nicely and provides a little grip.I travel with the kayak deck up.and with thecanoe gunwales down. Remember to only strap theboats lightly to the Darby.otherwise risk damageto hull! Entirely worth the money.and with notax and free shipping, no better price than ACK.Thanks ACK! First let me say that I got great service from ACK, timely shipping and best price.
I gave a rating of four stars because I'm not totally satisfied with the quality. (1) Paint was flaking at weld site and (2) for advertising that it needs to be held with straps, there are no mounts for connecting those straps. It just so happened that I needed to raise the cross member up one hole to match the height of my roof rack and so I used the now open holes to attach the hooks from my straps.
Although this worked well, I would not have been able to do this if I needed the lowest position. Having said all that, I padded the cross bar and my roof rack and use this to carry my 19 foot long hang glider and it works great. When I want to take it down but have it available it lays flat in my short (5 foot) pickup bed.
The extend-a-truck is pretty slick. I bought it so that I could easily transport my canoe to and from the lake and it has worked great.
There are two reasons I didn't give it a 5-star rating: 1) When I was attempting to use it as an upper rack it looked like it may not clear the sport racks on the cap of my truck (Chevy Silverado 1500). It looks like it may need one more hole which I will probably just drill myself if there is room for another and if I really need to use it in that configuration. 2) I had to wrap carpet around the 'T' member in order to avoid damaging my canoe while driving.
Not a big deal at all, but it would have been nice to include some simple padding. Aside from that, the product is great and AC&K has the best price on the web.
